The history of Halifax, Nova Scotia, began with the establishment of Halifax County in 1749. The city of Halifax, named for George Montagu-Dunk, 2nd Earl of Halifax, was established in 1749 as the capital of Nova Scotia and known as the “Warden of the North”. In 1844, the City of Halifax was incorporated and in 1848, the City of Dartmouth was created. The two cities amalgamated in 1896 to form the Halifax Regional Municipality. From its founding until 1905, Halifax was also home to the Royal Navy’s Atlantic Fleet.
The Canadian Forces Maritime Command (MARCOM) headquarters is located in Halifax along with the Canadian Forces Health Services Group Atlantic (CFHSG(A)). MARCOM is responsible for all Royal Canadian Navy operations in the Atlantic Ocean.
Halifax is a major economic centre in Atlantic Canada with a large concentration of government services and private sector companies. Major employers and economic generators include the Department of National Defence, Nova Scotia Power, Irving Shipbuilding, Halifax Shipyard, SNC-Lavalin, CGI, Emera Inc., IMP Group, Data City of Halifax was established as the capital of Nova Scotia in 1749 and named for George Montagu-Dunk, 2nd Earl of Halifax.
