$40 Ounces in Canada: What a Cheap Ounce Really Gets You

An ounce is 28 grams, so $40 an ounce comes to roughly $1.40 a gram. That is about as low as flower prices go in Canada, and it tells you what kind of flower you are looking at before you see a single photo.

At that price it is almost always value flower. Expect smaller buds, more leaf, lighter frost and a milder smell than top shelf. It might be popcorn buds from the lower branches, shake from the bottom of the bag, or an older harvest that needs to move. Some of it smokes fine. Some of it is dry, harsh or tastes of nothing.

Every harvest produces a range of quality. The biggest, densest and frostiest buds from the top of the plant go to the higher grades, and the smaller buds lower down sell for less, even when they come from the same plant.

Price also drops with age. Flower that has sat for months loses its smell and strength, so sellers cut the price to clear it. And some cheap ounces are simply lower grade flower from start to finish. A low price on its own does not tell you which of these you are getting, which is why it pays to check the flower itself.

Look for clear photos of the actual flower rather than stock images, and a listing that names the strain, the strain type and a grade.

When it arrives, smell it first. Good flower smells like the strain, not like hay or nothing at all. The buds should feel slightly sticky and springy, and a stem should snap rather than bend. Break a bud open and look for white fuzz, grey spots or a musty smell, which are signs of mould, and do not smoke anything that shows them.

Weigh it if you can. Most sellers count an ounce as 28 grams, so that is the number to expect on the scale.

Be careful with listings that promise top shelf or AAAA quality at a value price, use the same photo for every strain, or give no grade or strain type at all. A seller you cannot call or text before you pay is another warning sign, and so is being asked to pay before you know the delivery or shipping cost. If an ounce is priced far below everything around it, there is usually a reason.

Smalls and popcorn are small whole buds, usually from the lower part of the plant. They are often the same strain as the big buds, just smaller and less dense, which makes them one of the better ways to save money.

Shake is the loose material that breaks off buds in storage. It works for joints and baking, but it smokes harsher in a bowl and loses freshness faster. A cheap ounce of smalls is usually a better buy than a cheap ounce of shake.

Budget flower makes the most sense where looks and smell matter less. Many people use it for homemade edibles or infused butter and oil, where the flower is heated first to activate it and then cooked. It also works for rolling joints to share.

If you only smoke now and then, a smaller amount of better flower is often better value than a big bag you will not finish while it is still fresh.
