Federal blood limits

From 2 ng of THC per ml of blood a driving offence applies, and at 5 ng or more the penalty can reach 10 years in prison.^[3]

Autoroute 20, the bridges and zero tolerance

Much of Lévis is built around the car, with Autoroute 20 and Route 132 running through it and Autoroute 73 heading south to the Beauce. Quebec does not allow you to drive, or to be in control of a road vehicle, if your saliva contains any detectable cannabis.

Federal limits apply as well. A reading of 2 nanograms of THC per millilitre of blood, up to just under 5, is punishable by a fine of up to $1,000 as a summary offence. At 5 nanograms or more, the hybrid offence can bring a prison term of up to 10 years. Alcohol and cannabis together have a lower combined line: 2.5 nanograms of THC with 50 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood.

If you plan to use cannabis, plan the ride first. The ferry to Quebec City carries foot passengers, STLévis buses cross the city, and a taxi is cheap next to a criminal charge.

Edibles: the slow ones

Keeping cannabis away from children and pets

Edibles are the main risk in a family home. A cannabis gummy or chocolate looks exactly like a regular treat, and neither a child nor a dog can tell the difference.

Store every product in its original packaging, in a locked box or a high cupboard, and never leave a half-eaten edible on a counter or nightstand. If friends with young children are coming over, put everything away before they arrive.

If a child eats cannabis, call 911 or the Centre antipoison du Québec right away, and keep the package so you can say what was eaten. For a pet, call your veterinarian.

Where smoking is off-limits in Lévis

Quebec bans smoking and vaping cannabis in all indoor or outdoor spaces open to the public, and public roads count. In Lévis that rules out the Terrasse de Lévis, the trails at the Parc des Chutes-de-la-Chaudière, the ferry terminal and every street and sidewalk.
