Beldia Hash

Beldia, which Wikipedia describes as the traditional cannabis variety of Morocco, gives Beldia Hash its name. The hash is sold by the gram and in 3.5 g, 7 g, 14 g and 28 g sizes.

Beldia and the Rif

Also spelled beldiya, it is described in that entry as a local “early” type, sown from February, that gets by on less water than imported seeds need. Wikipedia adds that growing cannabis is long established in parts of Morocco, above all the northern Rif, and that the country remains one of the leading hashish producers. Sensi Seeds likewise says most of the cannabis grown in Morocco is in the Rif.

From garden plots to a production centre

Arab traders brought cannabis to Morocco sometime from the 7th to the 15th century, according to a belief Sensi Seeds reports. Wikipedia describes cannabis raised for local use in small plots, gardens and orchards from the 16th century, with the far northwest a recognized centre of production by the 18th. Sensi Seeds also dates wide cultivation, especially in the Rif, to the 18th century.

How kif gave way to hashish

Until young Western tourists began arriving in numbers in the 1960s and 1970s, Wikipedia says, Morocco made cannabis only in small amounts, and most of it was smoked as kif, a mix of unpollinated female flowers and black tobacco. Demand from those visitors and from buyers abroad then pushed growers from artisanal work toward larger-scale methods. Legends compete over how hashish-making itself arrived, but the article says the common belief is that it came at the peak of Western tourist influence; Wikipedia’s Hashish article places the start of large-scale production for international trade in the 1960s.
