Brantford is a city in southwestern Ontario, Canada. The City of Brantford is surrounded by the County of Brant and is politically separate with a municipal government. Brantford is sometimes known as the “Telephone City”: former resident Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone at his father’s home, Melville House, in 1874. Brantford is also the birthplace of hockey player Wayne Gretzky, comedian Phil Hartman and musician Walter Ostanek.

The first recorded settlement of the area was by Joseph Brant in 1784. He named the village after his family name and created a log cabin on the current site of the Canadian National Railway tracks. In 1813, John Ryckman built a gristmill on the Grand River, which was destroyed by fire three years later and rebuilt by his son Jacob.

In 1827, the Hamilton and Niagara Falls Road Company built a bridge across the Grand River at what is now Waterloo Street in Brantford. This bridge was destroyed by floods in 1832, but was rebuilt two years later by the same company. A new bridge was also built at that time across the Grand River on Colborne Street, but it was washed away by a flood in 1852. The current Colborne Street Bridge is the third bridge to be built at that location.

In 1876, the provincial government expropriated land along the Grand River to build a canal to allow barges to bypass the Niagara Falls. Construction of the canal began in 1879 and was completed in 1890. The canal allowed Brantford to become an important industrial centre, as it provided a way to transport goods to and from the Great Lakes.

Brantford’s growth continued in the 20th century, with the construction of several major industries in the city, including Dofasco, Massey-Ferguson, and Nestle. The population of Brantford reached its peak in 1961, with a population of 81,173. However, the city’s population has been in decline since then, due to deindustrialization and suburbanization. The population of Brantford was 80,194 in 2016.
