Lévis is a city in southwestern Quebec, Canada. It is located on the south shore of the St. Lawrence River, opposite Quebec City. A ferry links the two cities. Lévis is the seat of Le Haut-Saint-Laurent Regional County Municipality and of the judicial district of Kamouraska.

The city’s historical roots go back to 1647 when a French garrison was built at Pointe-Lévy to help protect New France from attack by Iroquois warriors.[5] The area was initially given the name L’Ancienne-Lorette (Old Loretto). In 1680, Sieur de Laviolette, founder of Trois-Rivières, was granted a seigneury by King Louis XIV. He named it after his patron saint, Saint-François-de-Laval, the first bishop of New France. Laviolette’s fort had strategic importance during the Beaver Wars of 1640-1701 because of its location on the Rivière de L’Assomption and its access to the St. Lawrence River.

In 1723, the seigneury was bought by the Seminary of Quebec, which held it until 1845 when it was sold to economist and politician Louis-Joseph Papineau. The city is named after him.

The City of Lévis was formed in 1861 when the Village of Lévis and the Township of Dorchester were merged. Lévis became a borough of Quebec City in 1966 and a city in 1985.

Lévis is the terminus for AMT’s Massy-Lévis commuter train line which links the city with Montreal’s Central Station and the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec headquarters in Downtown Montreal. Lévis is also served by Réseau de transport métropolitain (RTM) buses which connect the city with several neighbouring municipalities on Montreal Island, as well as with Sainte-Foy, Sillery and Cap-Rouge in Quebec City.

The population of Lévis was 85,012 as of the Canada 2016 Census, making it the sixth largest city in Quebec after Quebec City, Montreal, Gatineau, Sherbrooke and Saguenay. The city’s terrain is mostly flat with a few hills in the western part of the city.
