Coquitlam is a city in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia, Canada. Coquitlam lies approximately 20 km (12 mi) east of Vancouver.
The name “Coquitlam” comes from the Kwikwetlem First Nation, meaning “red fish up the river”. The Kwikwetlem have lived in the area for over 8,000 years. They were dispersed along creeks and rivers in small campsites of one or two families. The first Europeans in the area were trappers who came in search of beaver pelts in the late 18th century. This led to further exploration by fur traders such as Simon Fraser and John McLoughlin. The Hudsons Bay Company built a fort in the area in 1827, which was later replaced by Fort Langley.
Coquitlam began to grow in the 1860s after the construction of North Road (now Lougheed Highway), which connected the Mainland with Burrard Inlet and thus allowed for further settlement and economic development. The first school in Coquitlam was built in 1891. The Canadian Pacific Railway arrived in 1904, bringing with it more settlers and economic development. In 1910, Coquitlam was incorporated as a municipality.
In recent years, Coquitlam has seen significant population growth and economic development. The city’s population has nearly doubled since 1990. This growth is largely due to the expansion of Vancouver and the increasing affordability of housing in Coquitlam. The city has also seen a significant increase in the number of immigrants, particularly from China and South Asia.
Coquitlam is a vibrant and growing city with much to offer its residents. The city is home to a variety of retail, dining and entertainment options. Coquitlam also has a number of parks and recreation facilities for residents to enjoy. The city is well-connected to the rest of Metro Vancouver, making it an ideal place to live, work and play.
