The city has a long history of manufacturing. Some of the first industries in St. Catharines were grist mills and sawmills powered by the Niagara River. By the early 1800s, shipbuilding became an important industry in the city with the construction of wooden sailing vessels for trade and war. In 1812, during the War of 1812, American forces burned much of the city including all eight of its ships. The British eventually rebuilt the city and its shipbuilding industry flourished again during the 1800s with the building of steamships and later automobiles.
