Big Bud Strain: The Indica Named for Its Buds

Leafly lists Big Bud as an indica made from a three-way cross of Afghani, Northern Lights and Skunk #1, first developed in the United States and brought to the Netherlands in the 1980s. Sensi Seeds, which breeds a seed version, says the original came from an Afghan plant and a Skunk plant, was smuggled to the Netherlands during the War on Drugs and stabilised there, and that its own version now draws on Skunk #1 and Northern Lights.

AllBud also traces the original to Afghani and Skunk #1 and says it has since been rebred for different effects and potencies; AllBud and Sensi both put it at 85% indica. Sensi lists Big Bud as a Cannabis Cup winner in the indica category. AllBud calls it the overall winner of the 1989 High Times Cannabis Cup, but Wikipedia's list of Cannabis Cup winners names a different strain for that year.

AllBud says Big Bud was named for its oversized buds and huge yields, and Leafly notes that growers report massive buds with very few leaves; Sensi Seeds says they can get heavy enough to snap unsupported branches. AllBud describes long, dense, spade-shaped olive green buds with purple undertones, fiery orange hairs and white trichomes. Leafly rates Big Bud as mostly calming, and its more than 350 reviewers most often report feeling sleepy, hungry and relaxed; the top negatives are dry mouth, dry eyes and dizziness. AllBud says users describe a slowly creeping onset of heavy couch-lock along with an uplifted mood, and Sensi Seeds describes a full-body, sedative effect with a touch of euphoria.

Because the onset can creep up, start low and wait before having more, and do not drive for at least 6 hours after using cannabis, as Health Canada's lower-risk cannabis use guidelines advise.

Published THC numbers for Big Bud are far apart. Leafly lists about 14% THC and 0% CBD and rates it lower in THC than average, while AllBud gives 23% to 26%. Given how often the strain has been rebred, go by the label on the product in front of you rather than the strain name, and see how much THC percentage really matters for context.
