An Informative Guide to Langley, BC
Langley is a community located in the Fraser Valley of British Columbia, Canada. It is situated just east of Vancouver. Langley serves as the primary bedroom community for people who work in Vancouver and commute via the Trans-Canada Highway or via public transit. The population of Langley was 117,285 in 2016.
Langley was first settled by Europeans in 1827 when the Hudson’s Bay Company built Fort Langley on the banks of the Fraser River. The fort was originally built to compete with American fur trade interests, but it quickly became an important agricultural and economic hub for British Columbia. Fort Langley was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1923.
Langley Township was incorporated in 1873 and became a district municipality in 1955. The township comprises the communities of Aldergrove, Brookswood-Fernridge, Fort Langley, Murrayville, Otter District, Walnut Grove and Willoughby.
Langley is home to several post-secondary institutions including Kwantlen Polytechnic University, Trinity Western University and the Fraser Valley campus of the University of the Fraser Valley.
The Langley Events Centre is a 6,700-seat multi-purpose arena which hosts sporting events, concerts and other entertainment events. The Langley Rivermen of the British Columbia Hockey League play their home games at the centre.
The Township of Langley is governed by an eight-member council and led by Mayor Jack Froese. The township is divided into six electoral wards, each represented by one councillor, with two councillors elected at large.
The Langley School District serves the educational needs of the township’s residents. The district operates eight elementary schools, three secondary schools and a number of alternative education programs.
Langley is served by TransLink, the regional transportation authority responsible for public transit in Metro Vancouver. The township is served by four bus routes operated by Coast Mountain Bus Company, as well as three express routes to Vancouver.
VIA Rail provides passenger rail service to Langley via the Fraser Valley eastbound from Vancouver and westbound to Chilliwack.
Cannabis Use in Langley
Cannabis use is prevalent in Langley, Canada, with nearly one-third of residents reporting having used the drug in the past year. This is according to a recent survey conducted by the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI). The CIHI report also found that cannabis use is highest among young adults aged 18-24, with 38% of respondents in this age group reporting having used the drug in the past year.
Canada has been moving towards legalizing the drug for recreational purposes. In June 2018, the Canadian government passed legislation that will legalize cannabis nationwide by October 2018. This makes Canada only the second country in the world to legalize cannabis (after Uruguay).
It is still unclear how exactly the legal cannabis market will play out in Canada. However, it is expected that the market will be worth billions of dollars and create thousands of new jobs. With this in mind, it is not surprising that the number of Canadians using cannabis is on the rise.
