Why a chocolate bar works slowly
When cannabis is eaten, as in a chocolate bar, the liver processes the THC. That route is slower to start than smoking and lasts longer once it does. According to Health Canada, an edible’s first effects turn up somewhere between 30 minutes and 2 hours after eating, and the full effects can be up to 4 hours out.
Health Canada’s 2.5 mg starting point
The THC figure Health Canada’s lower-risk advice points to for an edible is 2.5 mg or less. Driving is off the table for at least 6 hours after using cannabis, under Health Canada’s lower-risk guidelines. Our edibles dosage guide covers how to work out an edible’s strength, and our guide to edible shelf life and storage explains how long edibles keep.
