Saanich is a municipality in British Columbia, Canada. A member municipality of Greater Victoria, Saanich is south of downtown Victoria and north of the municipalities of View Royal and Langford. With a population of 114,148 as of the 2016 census, it is the most populous municipality in the Capital Regional District and Vancouver Island, and the eighth-most populous municipality in the province.
The District of Saanich was incorporated on March 1, 1906. The Municipality of Saanich was formed when it separated from the District on7 December 1988. The name “Saanich” comes from the Coast Salish name for the area, Tsartlip.
The first people to settle in the area were the Coast Salish peoples. Archaeological evidence suggests that they settled here at least 4,000 years ago. The Saanich people were a prosperous and populous group, living off the plentiful resources of the land and sea.
The early European settlers in the area were farmers, attracted to Saanich by its fertile soils and mild climate. In 1858, James Douglas, chief factor of the Hudson’s Bay Company, established a farm at Brentwood Bay in present-day Saanich.Douglas also laid out the road now known as Old West Saanich Road, which ran from his farm north to Victoria.
With the development of industry in Victoria in the 1860s, Saanich became a popular residential area for wealthy businessmen and professionals. Many grand homes were built in the district, some of which are still standing today. The arrival of the railroad in 1906 brought further growth to the municipality, and by the early 1900s Saanich was well established as a bedroom community for Victoria.
Today, Saanich is a vibrant and diverse community of over 110,000 people. It is home to a variety of parks and recreation areas, as well as many businesses and industries.Saanichers take pride in their municipality, and are working together to ensure that it remains a great place to live, work, and play.
