The Best Cannabis Movies and Shows to watch while High
Cannabis is a plant that has been used in medicine, food, and drink for thousands of years. It’s also a plant that has been enshrined in film and television since the beginning of the medium.
From the first silent movies of the 1910s, where cannabis was sometimes used to treat pain and anxiety, to modern-day shows like Broad City, which uses weed as an integral plot point, cannabis has always been an important part of our media diets.
But what about when you’re high AF? Not all movies and shows are created equal when viewed from this perspective. Here are some of our favourites:
1) What We Do in the Shadows
This vampire mockumentary series is one of the funniest shows we’ve ever watched—and it’s just as funny while you’re lit as it is while you’re sober! The show follows four roommates who live together in New Zealand: Vladislav (played by Jemaine Clement), Nandor (played by Taika Waititi), Deacon (played by Jonathan Brugh), and Colin Robinson (played by Rhys Darby). Each episode takes place over the course of a month or so, with each character getting their own moment to shine in the spotlight. The show’s humour is both silly and dark, which makes it perfect for watching while you’re lit!
2) Cheech & Chong’s Up in Smoke
The first film from Cheech & Chong was released in 1978 and was an instant hit with fans of their comedy duo. It follows Cheech Marin as Pedro De Pacas and Tommy Chong as Anthony Stoner on their quest to buy a van. This movie has all the elements needed for an excellent cannabis-themed flick: funny dialogue, memorable characters (including O’Doyle), and plenty of references to smoking weed!
3) Breaking Bad
If you haven’t seen Breaking Bad yet, what are you doing? It’s one of the most popular shows ever created and features Walter White (Bryan Cranston) as he goes from a mild-mannered chemistry teacher to a drug kingpin. The series follows his transformation from man to monster as he does whatever he can to provide for his family. While the show is gripping enough on its own, it also happens to be one of the most popular shows that people watch when they’re high because it’s action-packed and full of twists and turns throughout each episode.
4) Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle (2004)
This movie about two friends on a quest for White Castle burgers is sure to put a smile on your face! Plus, it has an incredible soundtrack that includes songs by Sublime and Snoop Dogg. The perfect pick for when you want something light-hearted but still entertaining—and definitely not too serious.
5) The Matrix
The Matrix is one of those movies that everyone should see at least once in their life. It’s got action, romance, and stunning visuals—but what’s really magical about it is how the story unfolds around you as you watch it. If you’ve never seen The Matrix before (or if you’ve only seen it once), watch it again while high—you’ll be amazed at how much more complex the plot seems!
No matter what your reason for consuming cannabis is, there are likely plenty of movies and shows out there that will appeal to your interests. The sheer number of entertainment options is staggering, making it impossible to not find something that you’ll enjoy.
