What the Blueberry strain is
Blueberry, also sold as Berry Blue, is a berry-flavoured classic that Leafly calls an A-list strain. Leafly classes it as an indica and says it won Best Indica at the High Times Cannabis Cup in 2000. AllBud reports the same award but calls Blueberry an indica-dominant hybrid, 80% indica and 20% sativa.
The breeder is DJ Short. In a 2017 Willamette Week interview, his son JD Short said DJ started with 4 lines (Thai, Chocolate Thai, Afghan and Oaxacan), that the Blueberry plant people prize showed up around 1979, and that DJ pollinated sativa mothers with an Afghan male, the reverse of what most breeders did then.
The exact cross is disputed. Leafly's description says Purple Thai crossed with Thai, but its genetics chart lists Afghani and Thai, and AllBud calls the parentage unknown, probably Purple Thai and Afghan. Leafly adds that DJ Short shared the genetics with several seed banks and breeders, so plants sold as Blueberry can differ.
Look, smell and taste
AllBud describes grape-shaped, olive-green buds with blue undertones, orange hairs and a thick coat of amber trichomes. JD Short says DJ's plants stood out because he had stabilized a purple colour with berry and fruit aromas when most cannabis was spicy or skunky.
Leafly reviewers most often pick blueberry, berry and sweet as the flavours. AllBud describes a blueberry and vanilla taste and a sweet, spicy, earthy smell with floral accents. Effects people report
Leafly says Blueberry's effects are mostly calming, pairing its sweet flavour with relaxing effects and a long-lasting euphoria. Its reviewers most often report feeling sleepy, relaxed and happy, and the most common negatives they list are dry mouth, dry eyes and dizziness. AllBud describes a euphoric, hazy high that creeps up slowly.
These are reports, not predictions. Health Canada notes that short-term effects can also include confusion, sleepiness and anxiety, so start with a small amount, and its lower-risk use guidelines advise waiting at least 6 hours before driving.
How strong is Blueberry?
AllBud lists Blueberry at 16% to 24% THC, while Leafly gives a figure of 17% and rates it above average for THC. With so many seed lines behind the name, batches vary, so go by the THC number on the label of the batch you buy.

Leafly's Blue Dream page describes Blue Dream as a sativa-dominant cross of Blueberry and Haze, and Leafly lists Blueberry Diesel as Blueberry crossed with Sour Diesel, with a strong blueberry smell and a hint of fuel.
