What G13 is
Leafly lists G13, also known as G-13 and G Thirteen, as an indica. AllBud calls it an indica-dominant hybrid, about 70% indica and 30% sativa, with unknown parentage, and adds the nickname Government Indica Strain 1. Neither credits a breeder, and SeedFinder files it under Unknown or Legendary, noting that it was never sold as feminized seeds. The government lab legend
In the version retold on Leafly, the CIA, FBI and other agencies gathered top strains from around the world and bred new hybrids at a secret facility at the University of Mississippi in the late 1960s, and an unnamed technician smuggled out a cutting. AllBud's version has the government experimenting with Afghani strains in the 1960s and 1970s. Leafly says the legends are probably not true, and SeedFinder sums the story up as lots of myths and nothing concrete.
SeedFinder also quotes Neville's 1987 catalogue for The Seed Bank, which called G-13 an indica cutting reputedly liberated from the government research program in Mississippi and one of the best breeding plants in its collection.
Look, smell and taste
AllBud describes lumpy, very dense, dark olive green buds with sparse amber hairs and a thick coat of frosty trichomes. Leafly's reviewers pick earthy, pine and woody as the top flavours, and AllBud lists pine, sweet and woody, with a sweet, earthy taste and a smooth, skunky exhale. AllBud calls the smell powerfully pungent, with a rotting skunky berry overtone that can quickly turn harsh.

Effects people report
Leafly's reviewers most often report feeling sleepy, euphoric and relaxed, and Leafly rates G13's effects as mostly calming. AllBud describes a hard-hitting euphoric lift with a burst of energy that does not last long, followed by a heavy, buzzy body feel and a deep, lazy relaxation that lasts for hours.
The negatives Leafly users mention most are dry mouth, dry eyes and dizziness, and some reviewers warn that it can be overwhelming for new smokers. Health Canada suggests starting with 1 or 2 puffs and waiting up to 30 minutes for the full effect, and its lower-risk guidelines say not to drive for at least 6 hours after using cannabis.
How strong is G13?
Leafly shows 20% THC and 1% CBG and rates G13 higher in THC than average, while AllBud lists 22% to 24% THC. Any batch can test above or below those figures, so trust the label.
Crosses and related strains
SeedFinder counts 125 direct descendants of G-13 in its database, including Green House Seeds' Arjan's Haze #1. Two relatives with their own strain profiles:
- Hash Plant: Sensi Seeds crossed G13 with Hash Plant to make Mr. Nice, released in 1999 and named after Howard Marks; the breeder lists it as 100% indica.
