Romulan Strain: Effects, Taste and BC Origins
A note from Robert Misic

Next Generation Seed Company says a slow dry and proper curing greatly boost Romulan's aroma, so a good jar should open with clear pine. Its buds are hard and dense, and one grower calls it mould-prone, so check the centres for any musty note.

What is Romulan?

Romulan is an indica named after the alien race in Star Trek. Leafly lists its parents as North American Indica and White Rhino and says it is a popular choice among growers in the Pacific Northwest. AllBud calls it an indica out of British Columbia and says its full origins are a mystery.

The BC story is told by Next Generation Seed Company on SeedFinder, which calls Romulan a legend in BC and the Pacific Northwest, originally bred and grown around Victoria. According to that account, which the company credits to Romulan Joe, the source of its original cutting, the first breeders began in the 1950s with seeds brought home after the Korean War, later mixed in Colombian and Mexican seeds, and kept selecting short, squat plants, which is why many people assume it is a pure indica. Several seed companies now sell their own Romulan lines, so treat any single lineage claim with caution.

Look, smell and taste

Leafly says growers report dense, frosty buds. Next Generation Seed Company describes squat plants with large, dark green leaves, purple stems and hard, dense, frosty buds.

Pine is the constant. Leafly calls it distinctly pine-scented, and its reviewers most often name pine, earthy and woody as the flavours. AllBud describes a sweet, earthy smell and taste with hints of pine and citrus, and Next Generation Seed Company notes a strong piney smell. In Leafly's lab data, the most abundant terpene is myrcene, followed by caryophyllene and pinene.

Effects people report

Leafly describes intense, cerebral effects that eventually give way to sedation and relaxation, and rates Romulan mostly calming. Its 892 reviewers most often report feeling sleepy, relaxed and hungry. AllBud describes a deeply relaxed body high with a dreamy, floating feeling and says couch-lock is common, suggesting it is best saved for late nights at home.

AllBud warns that Romulan can be overpowering in high amounts, with possible dizziness, paranoia and headaches, and Leafly reviewers most often mention dry mouth, dry eyes and dizziness. Start with a small amount, and follow Health Canada's lower-risk guidelines: do not drive or operate machinery for at least 6 hours after using cannabis.

How strong is Romulan?

AllBud lists THC at 20% to 24%, and Leafly shows 19% THC and 0% CBD while rating it above average for THC. Because several breeders sell Romulan, potency varies by line and batch, so check the lab-tested numbers on the label.

Similar strains

White Rhino is one of the parents Leafly lists. Next Generation Seed Company has also crossed Romulan with Hash Plant to make Romulan Hashplant and with NYC Diesel to make Romulan Diesel. Leafly lists Golden Goat and Space Queen among Romulan's offspring.

Buying Romulan

The menu box on this page shows whether Romulan is on the GasDank menu right now; if it is not, it lists in-stock indica flower instead. Whichever you choose, look for lab-tested flower with clear THC and CBD numbers, buds that look and smell fresh, and a seller that shows this information.
