King Kong Strain: Lineage, Effects, Taste and THC
A note from Robert Misic

Descriptions of King Kong buds differ: Leafly describes dense, cone-shaped buds frosted in crystals, while AllBud pictures smaller, darker, leafier buds, a sign of the different cuts sold under the name. Either way, a good jar should smell pungent, sour and skunky.

What is King Kong?

King Kong is an indica-leaning hybrid, and more than one breeder sells a strain by that name. Leafly lists its parents as Chronic and Ed Rosenthal Super Bud, with King Kong OG and King Kong Kush as other names. Weedmaps credits that cross to Spanish breeder Dr. Underground, who combined Sensi Seeds' Ed Rosenthal Super Bud with a reversed Chronic from Serious Seeds, aiming for heavy resin, a short growing cycle and big yields.

Weedmaps also describes a separate King Kong from Big Buddha Seeds, made from Gorilla Glue, White Widow and a reversed Big Buddha Cheese, which placed third in the Bio category at the 2018 Highlife Cup in Amsterdam. AllBud blends the two stories: it says King Kong's mother was apparently an Ed Rosenthal Super Bud plant, but describes King Kong Kush as Buddha Cheese x White Widow Reversed, so check which version a product is.

Look, smell and taste

Leafly describes dense, conical buds frosted in crystals and ribboned with hairs, while AllBud says the buds are smaller than the name suggests, dark green and leafy. Weedmaps notes light green, trichome-coated colas and a 7 to 8 week indoor flowering time.

Leafly describes a pungent, sour, skunky smell, and its reviewers most often pick skunk, pungent and flowery. AllBud lists herbal, pine, skunky, tangy and woody flavours. The breeders differ: Dr. Underground describes lemon, skunk and incense, and Big Buddha Seeds a sour fruit flavour with a hint of chocolate. Leafly lists caryophyllene, myrcene and limonene as the main terpenes.

Effects people report

Leafly rates King Kong as mostly calming, and its reviewers most often report feeling relaxed, focused and aroused; Leafly also describes strong head-to-toe effects that can still feel uplifting and focused. AllBud describes strong, calming body effects with a euphoric lift in mood, and tags it euphoric, focused, happy and relaxing.

The negatives Leafly users report most are headache, dry mouth and dizziness, and AllBud adds bloodshot eyes. Start with a small amount, and do not drive afterwards: Health Canada's lower-risk guidelines advise waiting at least 6 hours.

How strong is King Kong?

Leafly lists about 17% THC and 1% CBG and rates King Kong above average for THC, while AllBud gives 14 to 19% THC and notes that solid figures are hard to find. With different breeders' versions on the market, check the label on the batch you buy.

Similar strains

Chronic, the Serious Seeds classic, is one parent of the Dr. Underground version, and White Widow is part of the Big Buddha Seeds cross. Weedmaps also names Cheese as a similar strain, in line with the cheese and blue cheese flavours its users report.
