What is Chronic?
Chronic is a hybrid bred by Simon of Serious Seeds and introduced in 1994. The original 1990s version had no AK-47 in it. By the late 1990s Simon felt it was dated and bred in his AK-47 to add some sativa and a more complex high, and the breeder dates the improved version to 2000. Its pedigree today is Northern Lights/Skunk x Northern Lights/AK-47, and Leafly lists the parents as Northern Lights, Skunk and AK-47.
Sources disagree on its lean. Serious Seeds says Chronic has mainly indica origins, AllBud calls it 80% indica, and Leafly files it as a balanced hybrid that is mostly energizing. The breeder calls it its most commercial variety, pairing a heavy yield with quality, and lists 7 awards, starting with third place in the hydro category at the 1994 High Times Cannabis Cup, the only time it was entered there.
Look, smell and taste
Serious Seeds describes huge, nearly leafless buds built from many small flower clusters that add up to colas the size of a brick, and says the plant tends to form one large central bud with few side branches. AllBud describes dense, grape-shaped, minty green buds with thin orange hairs and golden-amber trichomes.
The breeder's signature note is a sweet honey and wildflower scent with a little spice, and Simon warns that the aroma is easily lost if the buds are bagged before they are fully dry. Leafly's description lists sweet honey, flowers and spice, while its reviewers most often pick skunk, earthy and woody. AllBud adds strawberry and berry notes. In Leafly's lab data caryophyllene comes first, followed by myrcene and terpinolene.
Effects people report
Leafly describes the effects as energizing and uplifting, and its reviewers most often report feeling giggly, happy and talkative. Serious Seeds says the effect is strong in the body but also relaxing and carefree in the mind, with a hint of a meditative or creative feel, and credits the AK-47 side for a long-lasting high. AllBud's effect tags are creative, euphoric, giggly, happy, relaxing and uplifting.
The downsides Leafly users mention most are paranoia, dry mouth and dry eyes. Start with a small amount, and do not drive afterwards: Health Canada's lower-risk guidelines advise waiting at least 6 hours.
How strong is Chronic?
Published numbers disagree widely. Leafly lists about 13% THC and 1% CBG and rates Chronic below average for THC, while AllBud gives 20 to 22% THC and 3 to 5% CBD. Serious Seeds only describes the THC as high and the CBD as low. Treat any figure as a rough guide and check the lab label on the batch you buy.
