Weedmaps, which files it under hybrid, says the name carries more history than pedigree paperwork: the historical version traces to the California Haze scene of the late 1960s and 1970s, where purple plants appeared in the Original Haze population, and Sam the Skunkman described it as Original Haze with Colombian bloodlines.

The sources tell the name story differently. AllBud says the strain was named after Jimi Hendrix's 1967 song and Leafly says the song popularized it, while Weedmaps only places the name in the same psychedelic era as the song and a purple LSD sold as Purple Haze. Weedmaps adds that today's Purple Haze is not genetically uniform, so both lines circulate under the name.

Leafly says the buds typically take on vibrant lavender hues, fitting the name.
