Chocolate Thai Strain: The Thai Stick Sativa

Leafly calls Chocolate Thai a legendary landrace strain from Thailand that first appeared in the United States in the 1960s as Thai sticks: spindly flowers tied to a bamboo stick. Wikipedia traces Thai stick bud to northeast Thailand, where hill tribes grew it, and says most of the original bud was destroyed in the 1970s when the Thai government began its war on drugs.

Leafly says the plant was long-flowering and low-yielding, always produced male flowers and seeds, and was hard to clone, so Chocolate Thai most likely no longer exists in its original form; seed lines sold under the name are crossbred or of unknown origin. Weedmaps dates the strain to the 1970s and 1980s and says the breeder Dutch Flowers reportedly popularized it. Leafly and AllBud class it as a sativa; Weedmaps files it under hybrid.

Leafly says older smokers remember slender, airy, medium-to-dark brown buds with a chocolate-coffee smell. Modern descriptions differ: Weedmaps describes small, dense buds with a dark, coffee-like look, and AllBud small, rounded, minty green buds with thin orange hairs.

Leafly reviewers most often taste coffee, nuts and tobacco. AllBud lists a sweet, spicy, nutty chocolate flavour with vanilla-tinged herbs, over an aroma of earthy herbs and black pepper. Leafly rates Chocolate Thai as mostly energizing, and its reviewers most often report feeling focused, creative and aroused. AllBud describes a slow build that starts with euphoria and moves into a happy, focused, motivated state, with some physical relaxation underneath.

The negatives Leafly reviewers list most are dry mouth, dry eyes and paranoia. Start with a small amount and do not drive for at least 6 hours after use, as Canada's lower-risk cannabis use guidelines advise.

AllBud and Weedmaps both list 12% to 16% THC, Leafly lists 16% THC and 0% CBD, and Weedmaps says one lab sample tested above 15%.
