Chocolope Strain: DNA Genetics Sativa, Flavour and Effects

Chocolope comes from DNA Genetics, the seed company that California natives Don and Aaron founded in Amsterdam in 2004. On its Chocolope page, DNA says the strain debuted in the 2000s under the name D-Line, as a tribute to the chocolate strains of the 1980s, and that it crosses OG Chocolate Thai with Cannalope Haze, backcrossed further to shorten flowering. DNA credits it with more than 10 awards, including High Times Strain of the Year in 2007.

Both DNA and Leafly's Cannalope Haze page describe Cannalope Haze as a cross of the original Haze and a Mexican landrace, but DNA says Chocolope leans toward its Chocolate Thai side. DNA calls it sativa-dominant, Leafly classes it as a sativa and still lists the name D-Line, and AllBud puts it at about 95% sativa. DNA describes large, heavy, cylindrical buds with a golden look, brown and green streaks and vivid orange pistils. Cured buds, it says, smell earthy with a hint of sweetness that grows stronger when lit, with undertones of coffee, pastry and chocolate.

Leafly describes earthy, sweet coffee flavours, and its reviewers most often pick coffee, nutty and chestnut. AllBud lists chocolate, coffee, sweet and vanilla flavours and calls the taste smoky and chocolaty. Leafly says Chocolope gives a dreamy, cerebral effect and rates it as mostly energizing, and its reviewers most often report feeling energetic, uplifted and focused. AllBud lists creative, euphoric and happy effects, but says people sensitive to psychedelic or paranoid effects should take care with it. The negatives Leafly users mention most are dry mouth, dry eyes and feeling anxious.

Treat these as crowd-sourced impressions. Health Canada notes that everyone's response to cannabis is different, and that higher amounts of THC can cause greater impairment. For medical questions, talk to a doctor or pharmacist.

DNA says the strain has high THC levels but gives no figure. Leafly lists 22% THC and AllBud 18 to 21%. Check the label on the product you buy. Health Canada suggests starting with 1 or 2 puffs of a product with 10% THC or less and allowing up to 30 minutes for the full effect, and Canada's Lower-Risk Cannabis Use Guidelines advise against driving for at least 6 hours after using cannabis.
