Different types of hash
Dry sift hash

Dry sift is the process of rubbing, rolling, and tumbling dried cannabis over a finely woven mesh screen. This agitation removes resin glands from the plant material and trichome heads through the screen, breaking them off.
The dry sift is usually processed by extractors, which pass it through a number of mesh screens in an attempt to refine the hash. The powdery resin is commonly added to a bowl or joint as a topping to enhance its potency. Others like using it to make hash or rosin.
Bubble hash (ice water hash)
Trichomes on the buds are frozen and the ice crystals shatter, leaving a hash-like residue. Cannabis buds are placed in iced water to form bubble hash, also known as ice water hash. The trichomes are broken off by stirring or shaking the mixture, after which the resulting liquid is filtered through a series of fine screen bags.
The resin is filtered and dried, after which the substance is bubble hash. It has a dry, chalky appearance and feel, as well as a greasy, oleaginous texture.

How to make dry sift hash

The dry sift screen method
- Start with properly frozen material. It’s critical to keep the temperature as low as possible because trichomes on ice will break off and separate from the plant more easily.
- Before you hit ‘record,’ make sure that your material is on the screen. Start breaking it down and distributing it around once you’ve got it there; let the wax drip.
- Dry sifting on a screen is a very sensitive operation. You’re not looking for large amounts; you want high-quality material, and you’re willing to accept a low return rate. It should be quite high-quality as long as you take precautions.
The dry ice method
- Dry ice should be combined with your plant materials to a total of about 40 percent. Dry ice is five times colder than ordinary ice, around -109°F. The super cold temperatures and friction produced by shaking the bag will cause the trichomes on the plant material to shatter from their stocks and fall into the collection vessel below.
- The longer we shake, the more plant matter gets broken up and goes through the screen, contaminating our kief. This is why old-fashioned hash-making procedures are just as much an art as they are a science.
- It takes time to learn how to use different strings correctly in order to know when it’s the optimum time stop. You want to get the most yield without lowering quality.
- It’s time to gather once you’ve enjoyed the shake.
The difference in quality between the two procedures is evident: The dry sift has a lovely golden color, whereas the dry ice has plant matter mixed into it, making it green.
Turning kief into hash
- Fill the hash press with kief. The most common technique to do this is to wrap the kief in plastic, then newspaper, and so on, heating and rolling the brick slowly on a hot plate before putting it in the oven for up to eight hours at 250°F (120°C).
