Dab Habit Shatter - Runtz

A hybrid that Leafly named its Strain of the Year for 2020 gives Dab Habit’s Runtz shatter its name.

Bred by Cookies Fam, spread from Long Beach

Cookies Fam made the cross, according to Leafly, with Gelato as one parent. Yung LB and his crew out of Long Beach popularized the strain, by Leafly’s account, and it adds that the Dutch know it as Zwirlz and that at least 20 variations now exist. AllBud also lists Gelato as a parent and describes a hybrid balanced right down the middle between indica and sativa, and our strain guide calls it balanced too.

Resin-drenched buds from purple to lime green

Leafly’s grow notes describe resin-drenched buds that range from rich purple to lime green, and call it a plant for intermediate or advanced growers, one that can be raised inside or outside. Leafly puts flowering at about 63 days, or 7 to 9 weeks; outdoors, the plants finish in mid-October, and yields come in smaller than average. AllBud pictures dense, grape-shaped buds in olive green with thin orange hairs and dark purple undertones, coated in tiny, frosty, purple-tinted white trichomes. A Leafly reviewer adds dense, fairly purple nugs with hints of forest green.

Apricot, pineapple and sour berry

Leafly’s flavour tags are tree fruit, apricot and sweet; it says the strain is prized for a very fruity profile and describes its smoke as creamy. AllBud tastes tropical citrus and sour berry, and its aroma notes pick out sharp, spicy pineapple, which grows slightly pungent once the sticky nugs are broken up and lit. Of the terpenes Leafly ranks for the strain, caryophyllene dominates, then limonene, then myrcene.

A lift in the head, a tingle in the body

Leafly reviewers come away talkative, giggly and relaxed more often than anything else, and Leafly calls the effects euphoric, uplifting and long-lasting, rating them mostly energizing. In AllBud’s description, the high arrives a few minutes after the final toke, lifting the head first and then settling into a tingly feeling across the body. Leafly’s header gives 21% THC and 0% CBD, and AllBud’s range is 19% to 29%. Ratings average 4.6 on both sites: 1,140 ratings on Leafly and 171 votes on AllBud.

Clear, brittle and high in THC

This extract is clear like glass and turns brittle in the cold, so a piece breaks off with a snap. Dabbing is the usual method, and crumbling bits over flower is the other. Health Canada‘s lower-risk page names four extracts as high in THC, shatter, kief, hash and wax, and would have newcomers and occasional consumers give them a miss. Its lower-risk guidelines put 6 hours, at the very least, between a dab and driving.
