Blackberry Kush Strain: Lineage, Effects and Growing
A note from Steven De Guzman

Leafly traces Blackberry Kush to Blackberry and Afghani, and the nose shows both: sweet berries over a hashy, jet-fuel base. A bowl of fresh blackberries on the side plays up the fruit against the fuel.

What Blackberry Kush is and how it grows

Leafly describes Blackberry Kush, also called BBK, as an indica-dominant hybrid made by crossing Afghani with Blackberry, files it under indica and names no breeder. SeedFinder lists the original under Unknown or Legendary as a mostly indica strain with unknown genetics, probably Blackberry x Bubba Kush. For how much the indica label tells you, see indica vs sativa vs hybrid.

Several seed lines now use the name: SeedFinder lists four, including one from the breeder Jordan of the Islands. Dutch Passion's Auto Blackberry Kush is different again: an autoflower bred from Dutch Passion's Blueberry and a dark Kush hash plant. Leafly lists Auto Blackberry Kush as an alias, so check which plant a product actually comes from.

For growers, Leafly's notes say Blackberry Kush flowers in about 7 to 8 weeks, suits a sea-of-green setup and does not usually yield heavily. Dutch Passion says its autoflower reaches about 0.75 to 1 metre and is ready about 10 weeks after germination on a 20/4 light schedule. Check your province's home-grow rules before you start.

Look, smell and taste

Leafly's grow notes describe dense, attractive buds in purple and orange, and Dutch Passion says most of its autoflower plants show colour in the leaves and buds by harvest. Leafly describes the flavour as hashy, with a jet-fuel taste and aroma balanced by sweet berries, and its reviewers pick berry, sweet and earthy as the top flavours. Leafly's lab data lists caryophyllene, limonene and myrcene as the main terpenes; the cannabis terpenes guide has more on them.

Effects people report

Leafly's reviewers most often report feeling sleepy, relaxed and hungry, and Leafly rates the effects as mostly calming. Dutch Passion pitches its autoflower as a heavy-hitting indica with a strong body stone.

The negatives Leafly users mention most are dry mouth, dry eyes and headache. THC varies by grower and batch, so read the label. Health Canada suggests starting with 1 or 2 puffs of a product with 10% THC or less and waiting up to 30 minutes for the full effect. For medical questions, talk to a doctor or pharmacist.

Blackberry Kush Strain: Lineage, Effects and Growing, FAQ

Q.Who bred Blackberry Kush?

Nobody is credited with the original on Leafly or SeedFinder. Seed companies such as Jordan of the Islands and Dutch Passion have released their own versions under the name.

Q.Is Blackberry Kush the same as Blackberry?

No. Blackberry is one of its listed parents, and Leafly gives Afghani as the other.

Q.Is the autoflower version the same plant?

No. Dutch Passion's Auto Blackberry Kush is an automatic cross of Blueberry and a Kush hash plant, so it is a different plant that shares the name.
