What is the Chem Dog strain?
Chem Dog, more often spelled Chemdawg, is a hybrid that Leafly says the breeder known as Chemdog has grown and spread since 1991. Weedmaps notes that its exact genetic ancestry has never been confirmed, and AllBud lists it as 55% indica and 45% sativa.
According to Fat Nugs Magazine, two Deadheads sold weed from Colorado outside a Grateful Dead show in Indiana on June 6, 1991, calling it Dog Bud for its strength and Chem Weed for its chemical taste. A fan named Greg, later known as Chemdog, found 13 seeds in a later bag and kept three female plants: Chemdog (now Chem 91), Chemdog A (now Chem's Sister) and Chemdog B. Leafly's account ties the strain to a Colorado concert and Northern California bag seed, so details differ between tellings.
Chem Dog, Chemdawg or Chem Dawg?
They are the same line. Fat Nugs says the original spelling was Chemdog and that TopDawg, the breeder behind Tres Dawg and Star Dawg, used the Dawg spelling to match its other strains; Leafly says Chemdawg simply became the dominant name as growers spread it. Weedmaps also lists Chem 91 and Chem Dog 91.
Other cuts include Chem D, which Weedmaps says grew from another seed in the original batch in 2001, and Chem 4, which Fat Nugs says came from seeds returned to P Bud in 2006. Leafly's Chem D.O.G. is a different strain, a Chemdawg and OG Kush cross.
Smell and taste
Leafly calls the diesel-like aroma pungent and sharp enough to smell from a mile away, and its reviewers most often report chemical, diesel and pungent flavours. Weedmaps users report earthy, woody and diesel flavours with pine and citrus on the nose, and AllBud describes a spicy, plant-like taste with a hint of diesel. Leafly lists caryophyllene as the dominant terpene, then myrcene and limonene.
Effects people report
Leafly reviewers most often report feeling euphoric, relaxed and tingly, and Leafly describes a cerebral experience coupled with a strong, heavy-bodied feeling. Weedmaps describes a fast, cerebral charge with an upbeat edge before steadier body relaxation fills in. AllBud tags it creative, euphoric, happy and relaxing. The most common negatives on Leafly are dry mouth, dry eyes and dizziness.
Leafly warns new consumers that it tends to be very potent. Start with a small amount, and do not drive for at least 6 hours afterwards, as Health Canada's lower-risk guidelines advise.
THC and potency
Leafly lists about 18% THC and AllBud 19%, while Weedmaps gives 19 to 24.8%. Weedmaps adds that the original Chem 91 cut is clone-only and that seeds sold as Chemdawg are usually backcrosses, selfed lines, hybrids or recreations, so products using the name can differ. Go by the lab-tested THC on the package.

Leafly lists OG Kush and Sour Diesel as Chemdawg's children, and Weedmaps calls it a foundational parent of Sour Diesel that is believed to sit behind OG Kush, whose origin is disputed. Fat Nugs credits the Chemdog line with NYC Diesel, Chem Haze and Super Snowdog, and Weedmaps lists Stardawg among the most similar strains.
