God Bud Strain: The Story Behind BC God Bud

God Bud is an indica that Leafly lists as Hawaiian x Purple Skunk. Leafly says it originated in Canada and is sometimes called BC God Bud (another alias is Purple God Bud). B.C. Bud Depot sells it as BC God Bud, and its description, reproduced on SeedFinder, gives the genetics as God x Hawaiian x Purple Skunk, 75% indica and 25% sativa.

Credit for the line is not straightforward. Jordan of the Islands lists a God Bud with the same God x Hawaii x Purple Skunk parentage, calls his genetics the original, and notes that God Bud has been grown by others and won the 2004 Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam. SeedFinder's family tree traces BC God Bud back to the Jordan of the Islands line.

The award itself is well documented. SeedFinder records B.C. Bud Depot's BC God Bud as first in the indica category at the 2004 High Times Cannabis Cup, and Wikipedia's list of Cannabis Cup results puts God Bud by BC Bud Depot at the top of that year's Indica Cup, ahead of MK Ultra and L.A. Confidential. B.C. Bud Depot calls it the indica that brought the cup home to Canada.

Growers quoted by Leafly describe large, dense buds that are short and tinged with purple. Jordan of the Islands describes a smaller, darker plant with purple-ish, trichome-covered buds, and says growers who drop the temperature in the final week get more purple. AllBud mentions flaming orange hairs over plenty of white trichomes.

Leafly describes tropical fruit flavours with berry, lavender and pine, and its reviewers most often pick earthy, pungent and sweet. AllBud describes an herbal, musky taste and a tropical, earthy smell. Leafly's lab data lists myrcene, pinene and caryophyllene as the top terpenes; the cannabis terpene guide covers how each one smells.

Leafly describes God Bud's high as potent, fast and sedating, and its reviewers most often tag it sleepy, relaxed and euphoric. Strainpedia describes heavy physical relaxation and warns that the strong body effects can quickly bring on sleepiness in less experienced people. The most common negatives on Leafly are dry mouth, dry eyes and headache.

Those are user reports, not promises, and Health Canada notes that everyone's response to cannabis is different and can differ from one time to the next. Its list of short-term effects includes sleepiness, confusion, anxiety and slower reactions, and Canada's Lower-Risk Cannabis Use Guidelines say not to drive for at least 6 hours after using cannabis. Published figures vary: Leafly lists about 15% THC, AllBud 14% to 22% and Strainpedia 18% to 22%. THC depends on the grower and the batch, so read the label on what you buy, and keep in mind Health Canada's point that higher levels of THC can cause greater impairment and raise the risk of serious adverse effects.

For other Cup-winning indicas of the same era, Lavender from Soma Seeds topped the Indica Cup the year after God Bud, in 2005, on the same Wikipedia list, and Blueberry was the overall Cannabis Cup winner in 2000. Kosher Kush is a later example: the list shows it winning the Indica Cup in 2010, 2011 and 2012.
