Granddaddy Purple Strain: GDP Effects, Flavour and History
A note from Robert Misic

Granddaddy Purple's colour comes from anthocyanins, pigments set by its genetics and often brought out by cooler temperatures during the grow, so a deeper purple doesn't mean a fresher jar. For freshness, trust the grape-and-berry nose.

What Is Granddaddy Purple?

Leafly lists Granddaddy Purple as an indica popularized in 2003 by Ken Estes, also known as Grand Daddy Purp, Granddaddy Purps, Grandaddy Purple and GDP. In a 2026 Leafly interview, Estes said he built it from a purple cut called Purple Medicine that he says Pomo growers had in Humboldt, named it because it struck him as the granddaddy of all weed, and launched it in Oakland on Telegraph Avenue.

The exact genetics are disputed. Leafly gives Mendo Purps, Skunk and Afghanistan and notes that others claim Big Bud x Purple Urkle, while AllBud goes with Big Bud x Purple Urkle and calls it an indica-dominant hybrid at 70% indica and 30% sativa.

Look, Smell and Taste

Purple is the signature. Leafly describes flowers in shades of deep purple under a snow-like dusting of white resin, and AllBud describes strikingly purple buds with fiery orange hairs and sticky resin. For why some cannabis turns purple, see what makes weed purple.

Leafly says GDP inherits a complex grape and berry aroma from its Purps and Afghan heritage, and its reviewers pick grape, berry and violet as the top flavours. AllBud describes a super sweet grape flavour with a pungent, harsh aftertaste that can overwhelm some people. In Leafly's lab-sourced terpene data, myrcene leads, followed by pinene and caryophyllene.

Effects People Report

Leafly describes a fusion of cerebral euphoria and physical relaxation: thoughts may float in a dreamy buzz while the body tends to stay fixed in one spot. Across more than 5,700 ratings, Leafly users most often report feeling sleepy, relaxed and hungry, and the most common negatives are dry mouth, dry eyes and dizziness. AllBud describes a euphoric cerebral rush with a slightly psychedelic edge, followed by deep body relaxation.

Start with a small amount, and do not drive for at least 6 hours afterwards, as Health Canada's lower-risk cannabis use guidelines advise.

THC and Potency

Leafly lists GDP at about 17% THC and 0% CBD and rates it higher in THC than average, while AllBud gives 20% to 27% THC with around 1% CBD. Expect a range of roughly 17% to 27% depending on the grower and batch, and go by the label on the product in front of you.

Similar Strains

Several relatives have profiles on this blog. Big Bud is a parent in the Big Bud x Purple Urkle version of GDP's lineage, and Skunk #1 is a parent in Leafly's version. Leafly also lists Cherry Pie and Purple Punch as strains bred from Granddaddy Purple.
