Leafly describes Grape Ape as a mostly indica cross of Mendocino Purps, Skunk and Afghani, propagated by Apothecary Genetics and Barney's Farm. Apothecary Genetics' own listing on SeedFinder gives the same Mendo Purps x Skunk x Afghani cross and lists first places at the Green Cup in 2005 and 2006 among its awards. SeedFinder's family tree adds a caveat: it traces Grape Ape to Granddaddy Purple, marked "probably", so the exact pedigree is not settled.
Every source puts it on the indica side: Leafly files it under indica, AllBud rates it 90% indica and the breeder calls it mostly indica. For growers, the breeder lists 7 to 8 weeks of indoor flowering and an outdoor harvest from late September to mid October, and Leafly notes it does best with excellent air circulation, around 21 to 27°C and 50% humidity.
Look, smell and taste
Leafly says the dense, compact buds are wreathed in deep purple leaves that darken as the plant matures, and AllBud ties that colour to its purple ancestors (more on that in what makes weed purple).
The name comes from the smell. Leafly reviewers' top flavour tags are grape, berry and sweet, and AllBud describes sweet grapes with a subtle berry flavour, adding earthy and spicy notes to the aroma. In Leafly's lab data, myrcene leads the terpene profile, followed by pinene and caryophyllene.
Effects people report
Across more than 2,200 ratings, Leafly reviewers most often report feeling sleepy, relaxed and hungry, with dry mouth, dry eyes and dizziness as the main negatives. AllBud calls the high a profoundly relaxing, full-body experience that can bring strong couch-lock, best kept for night-time, though it notes the high can also feel euphoric and clear-headed. Dry mouth and red eyes are common, it adds.
Effects vary by person and dose. Health Canada's lower-risk cannabis use guidelines suggest lower-THC products and no driving for at least 6 hours after use.
How strong is Grape Ape?
Leafly lists THC at about 18% and rates it higher than average; AllBud gives 18 to 21%; and a lab test logged on SeedFinder for the Apothecary Genetics line shows 16.5% THC with 0.25% CBD. Expect something in that range, and check the label on the batch in front of you.
