Jean Guy Strain: Origin, Aroma and Reported Effects

Marc-Boris St-Maurice, director of the Montreal Compassion Centre, told Leafly Canada that the story began in 2005, when a member handed the centre plants he had grown outdoors and said were White Widow. The centre already sold a White Widow, so St-Maurice named the newcomer Jean Guy, the most Québécois name he could think of. Jean Guy later turned up in small-town Quebec, and clones were shipped to British Columbia.

Strain databases repeat the White Widow link: Leafly says Jean Guy is 'said to be a phenotype of White Widow', and AllBud calls it a White Widow phenotype too. In short, the lineage rests on what a grower told the centre, not on a documented cross.

Leafly Canada describes frosty green buds, a strong citrus smell and a lingering lemon-pine aftertaste, and AllBud lists its aroma as citrus and sour. Leafly mentions 'pastel buds loaded with golden crystal trichomes' and hints of lemon and pine, and its reviewers most often tag the flavour as citrus, lime and lemon. St-Maurice says the lemon-pine scent is how he tells a true Jean Guy from imitations.

Leafly reviewers most often say Jean Guy made them feel talkative, creative and energetic. Leafly describes energizing, uplifting effects but warns that 'scattered and distracting thoughts may interfere with productivity', and St-Maurice describes 'a clear, cerebral high that keeps you moving'. The most common negatives on Leafly are dry eyes, dry mouth and dizziness.

These are user reports, not test results. Health Canada lists short-term effects of cannabis that range from a sense of well-being and relaxation to confusion, sleepiness and impaired memory or concentration, and Leafly suggests people prone to anxiety dose with caution because of its typically high THC. Leafly lists Jean Guy at 17% THC and rates it higher in THC than average, AllBud gives a range of 14% to 24%, and a Good Supply brand manager told Leafly Canada that Jean Guy runs up to 25% THC with about 1% CBD. White Widow is the reported parent, though Jean Guy is grown and sold as its own strain.
