Hash Moroccan Phoenix carries the Moroccan name, and Sensi Seeds classes Moroccan hash as dry-sift, the family that also covers the usual hash of Afghanistan, Lebanon and Pakistan.

Cannabis in Morocco, century by century

• 7th to 15th century: Sensi Seeds reports a belief that Arab traders carried the plant to Morocco at some point in these centuries.
• 16th century: Wikipedia has Moroccans growing it for their own use, in small plots, gardens and orchards.
• 18th century: the far northwest becomes a recognized production centre in Wikipedia’s account, and Sensi Seeds says the plant is widely grown by now, particularly in the Rif.
• 1960s and 1970s: young Western tourists arrive in a wave. Before them, Wikipedia says, output was small and mostly went into kif: black tobacco mixed with unpollinated female flowers.

How kif gave way to hash

Wikipedia says demand from tourists and outside buyers pushed growers away from artisanal work and toward larger-scale methods. It also notes that several legends compete over how hashish-making itself reached Morocco; the widely held belief is that it arrived when Western tourist influence was at its peak. Its Hashish article puts the beginning of large-scale production for the international trade in the 1960s.

Chira, the sebsi and beldia

Moroccans call hash hashish or chira, and Sensi Seeds says they typically smoke it blended with tobacco. The sebsi, a long and thin-stemmed pipe topped with a clay or copper bowl, is used for kif or for hash mixed with tobacco. Beldia (also spelled beldiya) is the traditional Moroccan cannabis variety in Wikipedia’s description: a local “early” type, planted from February, that needs less water than imported seed.
