Laughing Buddha Strain: Effects, Aroma, THC and Origins
A note from Steven De Guzman

Leafly reviewers name tea, sage and herbal spice as Laughing Buddha's top flavours, while Barney's Farm lists roasted pepper, pineapple and lemon. Brew a pot of sage or green tea and set out fresh pineapple; between them, they catch both sides.

What is Laughing Buddha?

Laughing Buddha, sometimes just called Buddha, is a sativa bred by Barney's Farm from Thai and Jamaican strains. Barney's Farm describes it as almost pure sativa, made by crossing its landrace Thai sativa with its Jamaican hybrid, and lists it at 80% sativa and 20% indica. Leafly files it as a sativa, and AllBud calls it a sativa-dominant hybrid at 75% sativa.

Leafly and AllBud both call it a 2003 High Times Cannabis Cup award winner, and SeedFinder's awards list records it as a 3rd place for Barney's at that event, plus a 3rd place in the sativa category at the 2016 Karma Cup. Leafly adds that the plant grows fast and tall. For what the sativa label can and cannot tell you, see indica vs sativa vs hybrid.

Look, smell and taste

Leafly describes a sweet, fruity smell broken up by hints of spice and a rich, pungent smoke, and its reviewers most often taste tea, sage and spicy herbal notes. Barney's Farm lists the taste as roasted pepper, pineapple, lemon and herbal, with a fresh, sweet, exotic fruit aroma. AllBud agrees on the fruity, sweet smell with spice and a roasted pepper aftertaste.

AllBud describes hard, dark green and brownish buds with a thick coat of crystals. In Leafly's lab data, the most abundant terpene is myrcene, followed by caryophyllene and limonene; our terpene guide explains each one.

Effects people report

Reviewers' reports fit the name. On Leafly, where 294 people have rated it, the effects mentioned most are giggly, energetic and uplifted, and Leafly rates it mostly energizing. Barney's Farm lists giggly, energetic, sociable and euphoric effects with enhanced creativity, and AllBud describes a strong high that arrives within minutes without making people sleepy, along with a sense of focus.

The most common negatives on Leafly are feeling anxious, feeling paranoid and dry eyes, so a small first amount makes sense. Follow Health Canada's lower-risk guidelines and do not drive or operate machinery for at least 6 hours after using cannabis.

How strong is Laughing Buddha?

Figures vary by source. AllBud lists about 18% THC, and the Barney's Farm description stored on SeedFinder gives 18% THC and 0.4% CBD. Leafly shows 22% THC and 2% CBG and rates it above average, and the current Barney's Farm page lists 24%. Expect batch-to-batch differences and go by the lab-tested numbers on the product.

Similar strains

Laughing Buddha's closest relative on this blog is its parent, Thai, the landrace sativa side of the cross. Its other parent is a Jamaican hybrid from Barney's Farm. SeedFinder lists Highena, a cross of Laughing Buddha with Pineapple Upside Down Cake, among its descendants.
