What Lamb's Bread is
Leafly lists Lamb's Bread as a sativa of unknown genetic origin with roots in Jamaica, and says its original breeder is unknown. AllBud calls it sativa-dominant, rated 95% sativa, with Jamaican heritage. Growers on the Overgrow forum treat it as a Jamaican landrace, and one counted about 4 different seed sources selling Lambsbread, so what is sold under the name can vary.
Cannabis has not always grown in Jamaica. Wikipedia records that it was introduced in the 1850s and 1860s, imported from India for indentured workers during British rule, which is why Jamaican cannabis terms such as ganja come from Indian words. Cannabis later became tied to Rastafari and reggae in the country's public image.
Leafly says Lamb's Bread is believed to have been one of Bob Marley's favourite strains, and AllBud repeats the story. Neither gives a source, so it is best read as legend rather than documented history.
The genetics are murkier still. In a 2015 PLOS ONE study led by Dalhousie University researchers, a Jamaican Lambs Bread sample reported as 100% sativa was nearly identical to a reported 100% indica strain from Afghanistan. The authors could not rule out a sample mix-up, but concluded that strain names often do not reflect a meaningful genetic identity. Look, smell and taste
Leafly describes uniquely shaped, light green buds that resemble balls of sheep's wool, while AllBud describes golden green buds with red hairs and hints of lime green. AllBud likens the aroma to cheese and grass, and Leafly calls it pungent and cheesy with a sweet yet spicy flavour; its reviewers most often pick woody, earthy and spicy herbal notes. Leafly's page is inconsistent on terpenes: its description names caryophyllene as dominant, but its lab data lists myrcene first, then caryophyllene and limonene. Effects people report
Leafly says the effects are believed to be energetic and uplifting, and its reviewers most often report feeling energetic, focused and uplifted. The negatives they list most are dry mouth, dry eyes and anxiety. AllBud describes a cerebral, creative high and recommends it for daytime use.
These are reports, not promises. CAMH notes that cannabis can leave one person relaxed and another tense, anxious or confused, and that it can impair attention and short-term memory.
