What is Trainwreck?
Trainwreck is a Northern California strain. Leafly says Mexican and Thai sativas were bred with Afghani indicas to produce it, and seed company Humboldt Seed Organization traces it to an elite clone selected from several sativas and kept in Arcata, on Humboldt Bay.
It sits on the sativa side of the hybrid line. Humboldt Seed Organization lists its seed version as 60% sativa and 40% indica, The Cannigma calls it a sativa-dominant hybrid, and Leafly files it as a hybrid while describing it as a potent sativa. The name has no settled origin. Leafly repeats 2 stories: that growers raised it near a train wreck in Arcata, or that the plant's sprawling growth looked like a wreck. The Cannigma cites another, in which a couple of brothers harvested early so that emergency crews at a nearby train wreck would not stumble on their crop.
Look, smell and taste
The Cannigma describes light green buds covered in trichomes, with plenty of orange hairs. Humboldt Seed Organization describes large, compact buds with a coat of glistening resin.
Leafly calls the smell sweet lemon and spicy pine; The Cannigma notes citrus, menthol and pine with a zesty flavour; Humboldt Seed Organization describes spicy Kush, cedar and sour fruit, with citrus, oil, exotic woods and spice in the flavour. Leafly reviewers most often pick pine, earthy and woody. The Cannigma's summary of user reports adds relaxation. Humboldt Seed Organization describes a powerful effect that settles into a long-lasting body effect, and its description on Seedfinder says the strain is definitely not for beginners.
Reported downsides include dizziness, dry mouth and dry eyes, and The Cannigma adds paranoia. These reports are crowd-sourced, and Health Canada stresses that everyone's response to cannabis is different and can differ from one time to the next. Despite its reputation, listed figures sit in the mid-teens. Humboldt Seed Organization lists 13 to 15% THC for its seed line, The Cannigma's average of lab tests is about 16%, which it calls high-moderate, and Leafly shows 17%. THC varies by batch, so check the label. Health Canada notes that higher levels of THC can cause greater impairment and raise the risk of serious adverse effects.
