Black Tuna

5 Star Organic bred the British Columbian strain this indica-listed flower is named for, according to Leafly and AllBud, crossing Lamb’s Bread with Herijuana, a parent AllBud spells Herojuana.

Leafly and AllBud both credit 5 Star Organic with the strain, and both class it as a hybrid, which AllBud divides 50% indica and 50% sativa. Leafly also knows it as Tuna Black and shows Tuna OG as a child strain.

According to Leafly, the strain became well known in Canada for very strong effects and playful packaging, since pre-packed product was sold in sealed tuna cans. AllBud tells the same story, calling the marketing quirky.

Named for a smuggling gang, not for fish

Leafly and AllBud both say the name has nothing to do with a fishy smell. They trace it to the Black Tuna Gang, known for smuggling Colombian marijuana into the US in the 1970s.

Compact, sage-green and skunky

Leafly and AllBud describe compact, trichome-covered flowers with a strong smell, and AllBud colours them a rich sage green with darker green shades and hints of purple. Leafly reviewers write of dark green, orange-haired buds smelling of skunk, apricot and dank cannabis, and one says a single gram, which came in a can, scented the whole house. Skunk, woody and earthy top Leafly’s flavour list. AllBud calls the flavour spicy and the smell slightly putrid and spicy, with herbal, skunky, spicy and woody among its flavour tags.

Strong by reputation on both sites

Leafly warns that Black Tuna’s strength may overwhelm beginners or moderate consumers. AllBud, which lists THC at 22% to 28% for the strain, says it may be a bit much for those same groups. Leafly’s effect meter reads mostly calming, with relaxed and euphoric as top effects, and AllBud users report euphoria and happiness. Leafly’s 243 ratings average 4.5, and AllBud shows 4.7 from 22 votes.

Health Canada‘s starting point sits well below that range: 1 or 2 puffs, from a product capped at 10% THC.
