The Mississippi story, as Leafly retells it

Leafly’s version of the legend has US agencies, including the CIA and FBI, collecting top strains from breeders worldwide and breeding new hybrids at a University of Mississippi site in the late 1960s. A technician supposedly carried one cutting out. Leafly adds that the story is probably not true, and our G13 guide calls it unproven.

AllBud repeats a rumour of US federal work with native Afghani strains in the 1960s and 70s. Leafly also spells the name G-13 and G Thirteen.
