Indica
IndicaGrape Ape takes its name from its smell: Leafly says the strong grape-like scent gave the strain its name. The hybrid flower here can be had at 14 g or 28 g.
Parent strains and who propagated it
On Leafly the strain is mostly indica, a cross of Mendocino Purps, Skunk and Afghani, and the propagation credit goes to Apothecary Genetics and Barney’s Farm. AllBud names the same three parents in what it calls a largely indica cross and rates it 90% indica and 10% sativa. Our Grape Ape guide also calls it a mostly indica strain from Apothecary Genetics.
Purple that deepens as the plant ripens
By Leafly’s account the buds are dense and compact, and the deep purple leaves around them darken as the plant ripens after a 7 to 8 week flowering time. AllBud says both the buds and the leaves take on a deep purple colour, as they do in the strain’s purple ancestors. In Ohio, a Leafly reviewer who grew it outdoors reports well-formed buds and a distinctive grape aroma.
Sweet grape with a faint berry note
On AllBud, both taste and aroma come across as sweet grape touched with a faint berry note. The flavour tags it shows are berry, fruity, grape and sweet, and the aroma tags are earthy, fruity, grape, spicy and sweet. Leafly tags the flavour as grape, berry and sweet, and in its terpene data myrcene leads, ahead of pinene and caryophyllene.
A link to The Original Z
Leafly counts The Original Z among Grape Ape’s descendants. In our Grape Ape guide, Steven De Guzman’s tip points out that SeedFinder describes The Original Z as a mix of Grape Ape and Grapefruit crossed with an undisclosed strain. For anyone who likes the grape and berry of Grape Ape, he adds, The Original Z keeps the grape and brings in lime and grapefruit.
THC readings and reported effects
Leafly shows THC at 18% with 0% CBD and rates the potency higher than average, and AllBud lists 18% to 21%. Our guide notes that figures run from about 16% to 21% depending on the batch.
Leafly reviewers tag relaxed and hungry, and its 2,277 ratings average 4.3. AllBud calls the high deeply relaxing and full-body, and says it can feel euphoric and focused, with the head staying clear. Its tags are euphoria, happy and relaxing, from 85 votes and 63 reviews averaging 4.6. The indica and hybrid wording is covered in our guide to how strain type labels are read.
