How Morocco became a hash exporter
Cannabis has a long record in Morocco, above all in the northern Rif, but Wikipedia’s Cannabis in Morocco page says hash-making is widely thought to have taken hold when Western tourism there was at its height, though several legends tell it differently. Farmers then scaled up from artisanal methods to supply visitors and foreign buyers. The page still ranks Morocco among the leading hashish producers, and Sensi Seeds places most of the country’s cannabis growing in the Rif.
Soap bars, slabs and producer marks
In the 1990s the European market was dominated by 250 g blocks of Moroccan hash, known as soap bars, the Hashish article says. Many slabs carry a producer’s mark, Wikipedia’s Morocco page notes; it might be a number, a design or a borrowed commercial logo, and the marks follow no fixed system from season to season.
Some sifted powder is sold loose, but slabs come from pressing it and heating it again and again. Farmers shape the powder into balls, sticks or bricks, and Sensi Seeds explains that when some of them apply heat as they press, oil is coaxed out of some of the trichomes, which is what turns loose powder into a sticky, solid lump.
Grade and colour in Moroccan sift
Quality is decided at the sifting stage. Wikipedia and Sensi Seeds both rate the first beating of the dried plants highest, with each later beating, the second and then the third, giving poorer sift. Health Canada’s advice before a first try
Health Canada places hash among high-THC extracts and counsels new or occasional users against them. Behind the wheel, its lower-risk guidelines add, the wait after cannabis should be 6 hours or more.
