In February 2021, a cigar category director quoted in CStore Decisions said Backwoods would have a limited-time offer of Wild Rum, the tobacco cigar style these Backwoods are named for. He named it among the new products he was seeing, in an article on the cigar and tobacco category.
National since 1981, broadleaf on the outside
ITG Brands, the Imperial business in the US that produces Backwoods, says the cigars were introduced nationwide in 1981. Imperial Brands states that Backwoods wrappers are 100% broadleaf tobacco, a leaf it says gives every cigar an appearance of its own.
Growth and new flavours in the 2025 report
New flavours helped Backwoods grow its slice of its cigar segment again, Imperial Brands’ 2025 annual report says, and bringing out Backwoods Wraps extended the brand further.
